Well, the corrupt church idea sounds pretty interesting. Then somebody
talks about evil gods sending their "agents" to create havok. And boy, oh
boy, did I ever come up with an idea. Whoever said the "agent" had to be
human... demon, maybe, devil, DOPPELGANGER...HMMMM?
*Evil grin from ear to ear*
The doppelganger could kill one of the head honchos, imersonate him, and
commit some vile act, or whatever...the possibilities are endless.

Subject: ADND-L: Munchkins
Somebody whose mail I deleted a little too hasily asked what level is good
for retiring characters, before they become munchkins. Well, I've been
involded with munchkinism before, and I have noticed that just before the
characters are officially considered munchkins, they actually start to
look forward to finding the next monster, just so they can kill it for XP,
gold, magic. As soon as it happens, DO SOMETHING! ...break their weapons
...send them to Ravenloft/Abyss/Hell ...render them to oatmeal-chewing
invalids ...give them a chance to be involved in politics. Just retire them
with dignity. (not force them to retire)

_YAH_!
I actually did once try to start an adventure like that. Nothing ever did
come out of it, but I did think up some rules concerning the brew.
I had decided that the potion gives the person a STR of 25, CON of 25, DEX
of 20, a move of 48", and 5 additional attacks per round. The effects wear
off in 1-6 turns. (in Obelix's case - never) However, you have to be
careful to keep it from being the 'traditional' munchkin game, in that the
humor has to keep flowing left and right. This is why my game flopped. The
players decided to KILL the Romans.
Anyway, I pride myself in having reading read the _ENTIRE_ Asterix series
in two languages, so I'll be glad to keep discussing the subject.

Hmm. You could always ask the guys at TSR.
In my opinion though, if you make very clear within the software that the
monsters _ARE_ the work of TSR, and that you are not out to make a buck,
etc. I don't think they'll come and haul you away. You are, after all,
promoting their game. Besides...you live in Italy; how are they going to
sue you? Over the phone?!? :)

The above mentioned opinion is only my uneducated opinion. I have no legal
background, and I have never had any of this explained to me by anyone

Someone asked for a 1st ed. level 15+ module. I think there were quite
a few, but one that I played was _Isle of the Apes_ for Greyhawk. You don't
need any greyhawk rules to play it, since it doesn't really take place in
Grayhawk. I recommend it if you're out to slaughter you characters. I had a
wagonload of 18-23 level guys go through, and they barely got through the
first battle! I don't recommend it, but it's the only module that high a
level I ever played. (I don't like modules very much anyway. :)

DM's poll. Good.
Frst, miniatutes: I have only about twenty or so since I only got started
in that a little while ago. I have no special preferences about the
companies who make miniatures. (I just don't buy crappy ones :) I do,
however, have a paint preference. Citadel. Doesn't clump, good, true
colors and it comes in those neato flip-top containers. For primer,
however, I use the generic Canadian Tire autobody primer. Does the trick.
Next, dice: I have about 50 or so dice in all shapes and colours. I have
the old opaque, sharp jointed ones, and the smooth crystal gems. With
everything inbetween. I like smooth green gems. Why, I dunno. But my most
favorite dice in the whole, wide world are a set of red and white d10's
that I got with my Marvel Superheroes. These dice love me, and I love my dice.
:)

Ah yes, I have also strayed to the Paladium Way one or twice, but I don't
really like either system. I had something running through my skull though:
HP in the beginning are just the same as they've always been then, maybe
something like this for HP advancement:
warrior: 4hp/lvl
rogue/priest: 2hp/lvl
wizard: 1hp/lvl
and the armor..yes the armor.. each set of armor should have the negative
effects on AC times by ten.
i.e. leather armor (ac 8) has 20 hp.
+1 shield has 20 hp
magical armour could take half damage....
the character absorbs only a portion of the Hp depending on the armor
(minimum 1hp)
ie:
full plate...1hp
leather...1/2
...whatever... a fair chart would have to made up....
oh yeah, and as the armor takes damage, the AC rating goes down (always
rounding up) therefore, armorers will be able to restore so and so many hp
on a suit of armor.
Comments/Criticisms?
(personally, I think there too many numbers...that's what I don't like
about Palladium...too picky :)

Well, I enjoy playing because it puts me somewhere else. If I'm aplayer, I
can make believe that I am someone dramatic and exciting and that has real
effects on an imaginary world. If you imagine by yourself, it gets dull
after a while.
When I'm at the DM's end, I enjoy designing new, exotic places, and
creating real live imaginary things that can have an effect on other
people's imagination. Another reason I DM is quite often because someone
wants me to. (and I'm glad to oblige as long as I get to be a player
sometimes too. :)
I like ADND because 1) it's pretty universal, and you can always find
others that play it too. and 2) the rules are pretty simple to figure out.
(unlike some games where you have to a mathematician to play :)

Sorry about that last post. Hit the wrong button.
Anyway, what I meant to say was this:
Way to go! I've had to put up with this sh*t for a long time (my town has
10,000 people and 30 churches), and I've also had a bunch of Biblethumpers
sit in on one of my sessions. It didn't work out so well though. My group
at the time contained this budding yound schlemil who liked inter-party
conflicts. Sure enough, they were convinced that the devil was
manipulating our minds. (but the fact that nobody liked this guy in real
life either was beyond their grasp) But hey; I needed another player. Just
thought I'd amuse you guys with that little story.
I have also never seen a good, solid argument against DND. (one that I saw
was based on that 'diary' short-story thingie that Dragon puts out every
month. The character was psychoanalyzed and was decided that he/she had
severe mental disorders. I would have liked to have seen the author of
that essay when she found out that 'diary' is fiction. :)
As for the plot line in that adventure..it's better than what I usually
come up with. :)
Maybe I should start collecting scenarios...hmmm...

As for summer attendance, count me in. I'll be around all the time. (I
guess I should post a little more often...)
As for the Ravenloft problem... give in. Give the guy his slab 'o land.
But also don't forget to curse them well. ;) After a while, they'll want
to leave! You could maybe make a whole quest out of it...
as for my opinion on T$R scenarios...
Dragonlance: It was OK when it first came out, but it became too
commercialized. I don't like it, because I know what happens before I
play, since I read a couple of books. It became too much of a soap opera.
Darksun: Dunno. Never tried it.
Greyhawk: Too generic. Mind you, I never DMed it, I was only a player in
it, and I has a pretty bad DM. Maybe I'll take another look at it someday.
Spelljammer: I've gotta side with Thomas on this one. In my opinion, it sucks.
Forgotten Realms: Good potential. It's flexible enough to have just about
any sort of adventure you want. It's a nice world (not a sub-game-system)
where you can be whoever you want. (It seems to me that in DL, Tanis and
the crew are the only ones who ever have any fun)
Ravenloft: I like. This will whip your players back into shape before they
become munchkin hack&slashers. Great for roleplaying and flexibility. I
find that it has to be used in moderation. (i.e. you just 'drop' the
characters in for a brief visit with Strahd ... )
See ya!

Since we have now seen the list's top 40 books (which, in my opinion,
are a fine choice) I think it would be a good idea to put together a list
of books that really SUCK! You know, the kind that after you read it, you
want to throw it away like a used Q-tip? Anywho, since it's my idea, I
volunteer myself to be the scribe for such a list. So, if you have the
time, write the books title, author, and why you hate it. I will then post

First of all, about the subject headers. As long as there is ADND-L
somewhere in the subject line, I for one am happy. I do not care about
giving all of my mail eartags and radio collars.
Next of all, about advice. I don't think advice needs to be classified.
(That's why there is a discussion group, not a database) Roleplaying is
not something cut-and-dried but is something that is supposed to be fun
and spontaneous. Not that I'm saying that you're doing something bad by
classifing the thing, it's just that I'm not sure it will be appreciated.
(Hell, I've never looked at the ADND-L archives, and I don't care to,
unless I'm looking for something in particular)
In a nutshell, if I wanted an organized hobby, I would not be playing
ADND, but I would be lining up toothpicks by size on a flat surface.
No hard feelings, just my opinion.

Well, I own the wizard's guide, the priest's guide, the thieve's guide,
and the Arms & Equipment guide. (or whatever their names are.)
So here's a quick review:
Wizard's guide:
The kits aren't bad, but they're to constricting. Certain types of
wizards behave certain ways. (If you know what I mean) There are new
spells, and a few new magic items, but I don't think it's worth it (I
picked it up used for a song ;) all in all, I think you can find material
that's just as good (or ,as the case more often is, better ) in the way of new
spells and magic items in Dragon, Legends & lore, and this list :)
Priest's guide:
Most of the manual talks about creating your own pantheon of gods.
Sure, they have some useful guidelines, but if you have even a semi-active
imagination, you should be able to figure out this by yourself. The kits
are junk. They work only for highly-specialized situations. They have some
new spells and magic items, but the same goes for this as with the
wizard's guide.
Thjieve's guide:
Not bad. This one has very useable kits (like the fighter's guide)
which can be easily adapted to almost any situation. There's a section on
new equipment (everything a sneaky scoundrel needs to make an 'honest'
living ;) I find this pretty useful (ifyou think about it, why don't they
have the prices of rapelling gear in the PHB?) There are the magic items
again..(see wizard's guide) They also have a neat sections on how criminal
organizations are run. Kinda useful. (if you want to design a
mafia/thieve's guild)
Equipment guide:
Great. Well woth it's money. If you have ever had an argument about
what the hell a bec-de-corbin is, and why it does so-and-so much damage,
and had no idea what you were talking about, you'll really appreciate
this. EVERY weapon/armor/(and some equipment) (plus more!!) is listed in
here with a drawing, a quick blurb on why it is used, for what it is used,
and how it is used, and the opinion of some 'reknown' adventurers about
the pros/cons of the weapon in question. Many of the weapons also have a
short history too. There's also a section of clothing, which gives you an
idea of what people wore back then. (No, they did NOT go sit at the supper
table in full plate armor! :)
Anyway, that's my beef.

Sorry about that. I hope nobody took that the wrong way. I'm going to

In the beginning, DragonLance was great. I liked it too. A bunch of heroes
fighting incredible odds in an ongoing saga. Needless to say, it sold
well. This is where the brilliant T$R marketing came in. Soon, they
published the rest of the world (which was kinda neat) and more and more
adventures. This is where the boredom started to kick in for me.
EVERYTHING had some sort of connection with our original hero friends. To
tell you the truth, I got sick of seeing their names in print. (Same goes
for the villains)
Another thing that really ruined the original concept was the books. They
gave the plot away. I once had a real jerk of a player who read all the
books, and rules-lawyered the game to death. He was also destroying the
plot, because he knew all the secrets, magic items, etc. We got rid of him
quickly, but he had already spoiled too much of the good surprise in the
little time he got out of hand. Another aspect I have of those &^$^$#
books is that once you read them, you don't really feel adequate if you
don't run the adventure as well as the book's author.
All in all, I think if it would have been for a little more variety in the
main theme, and if they would have keept the books and the actual DND
stuff separate (like DL Heroes...I enjoyed that :), I would probably still
like Dragonlance today.
Now, as far as Favorite Scenarios go, I'm all for RavenLoft. :)
